"From Me to You" is a lighthearted coming-of-age story, placed against the backdrop of the Beatlemania era in the early and mid-1960s. And it poses this question Can a friendship between two pen pals, living on separate continents, lead to something much, much more? It's the summer of 1963 when we first meet teenagers Ricky Kramer (in New Jersey) and Maggie Carter (in Liverpool), who have been writing to share their enthusiasm for the Beatles. Maggie has regaled Ricky with her stories of seeing the group often at the Cavern club in Liverpool, and has sent him the Beatles' early records, giving him a jump on the rest of America, before the Fab Four take the country by storm. Their friendship begins to blossom into something deeper than a typical correspondence. Even their friends sense that the two are truly kindred spirits, perhaps even soul mates. But can Ricky and Maggie's relationship grow when they are separated by the Atlantic Ocean? "From Me to You" follows their often comic transition to young adulthood, on both sides of "the pond." Whether you were a teenage Beatles fan in the '60s or later, you will likely recognize yourself in Ricky, Maggie, and their friends, as they get swept up in Beatlemania, while learning a few of life's lessons along the way.

Up front I have to say that I kind of know (e.g., internet-know) one of the authors, well enough to realize this isn't intended as autobiography. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but realistic enough to be believable. As someone who grew up in the era portrayed, I found the story delightful. Maggie and Ricky felt like kids I knew back then. Maggie discovering New York and New Jersey gave me a new appreciation for my own upbringing. Ricky discovering London (and his true career calling) was a lot of fun.One incident in the story made me particularly nostalgic. Like so many other girls, I got hold of the full script for A Hard Day's Night from a magazine (I think it was Seventeen Magazine) and memorized it. When I recently discovered the movie again (on Hulu) I was pretty surprised to find out how much of that script I remember. (It wasn't that good a movie. I was that dedicated a fan.)
The story ends perfectly but I hope someday there's a follow up showing the pair learning of John Lennon's murder. It's a moment I shared with my best friend. It's the kind of moment best friends like Ricky and Maggie needed to share.
My only complaint is that the Kindle formatting sometimes made it difficult to read. I only wanted to knock off a half star for that but Amazon won't let me do a half star.
I wonder if either of the surviving Beatles has read From Me To You. And, if not, why not? Get on it, lads!

From Me To You Kelly Marie Thompson Garry Berman Books Reviews
Growing up in the Beatles era, this book really took me back to those wonderful years. The content was "spot-on"! I loved the story of the two main characters who were pen pals from America and England. They both connected on the rising fame of the Beatles music. The story drew me right in to the point that I did not want to put the book down. I couldn't wait to see what would happen and it did not disappoint me. The book was fun and sweet and wrapped me up in many emotions that brought me right back to the most wonderful memories of my teen years. Read and enjoy!
"From Me to You" is a completely charming story of two pen pals, one in New Jersey and one in Liverpool, on the cusp of worldwide Beatlemania. Teenage penpals Ricky and Maggie find their long-distance friendship growing and bonding over a shared love of music and a shared ambition to become journalists. If you lived through the first generation of Beatlemania, you will recognize these characters and their time and look back in wistful nostalgia. If you are a younger fan who didn't experience it first-hand, you will relate to these two teens as their correspondence leads to a deeper relationship. As someone who had many penpals as a teen and young adult, I found myself drawn into Ricky and Maggie's story and waiting for them to finally meet in person! Today's teens, with the instant gratification of email and Instagram and Facebook, will be fascinated by the "way things used to be" as Maggie and Ricky eagerly await each other's letters. Arching over all is the phenomenon of Beatlemania and the uninhibited joy of discovering their music. This book is a lovely, sweet evocation of a time gone by -- a gentler time than our own -- when a boy and a girl could meet as penpals over a mutual love of one very special band. It's a sweet read, no matter what generation of Beatles fans you belong to -- I highly recommend it!
